Formal negotiation of compensation

Scenario 1

Manager: What was the salary from your most recent position?
You: ❣️Focus on Your Skill Set: “I would rather focus on the skills I bring to this role than disclose my salary from the past at this stage in the interview process…[insert skills here]”

Manager: What was the salary from your most recent position? (repeat)
You: ❣️Remind your interviewer of new law. Then give (a little higher than) your desired salary number: “In June of 2019, Washington state passed legislation allowing employers to request salary history only after agreeing upon the salary of the new position. That being said, I have done significant research on the regional earnings on this role considering my skill set and background, and I have found…”

Scenario 2

Manager: What is your desired salary?
You: I’m interested in learning more about this position before we talk salary. In regards to opportunities, I’m looking for…”
🧶Examples: Promotion, growth, more responsibility, more challenging role, etc.
Manager: Alright, but what is your desired salary?
You: Based on my research, I’m looking for $______ but I’d like to consider all aspects of an offer, not just salary. Does this align to your budget?
Manager: No, unfortunately, that is pretty far off.
You: …?
Manager: That’s slightly higher than what we are budgeted for.
You: …?
Manager: Yes, it does.

Scenario 3 Manager reply to candidate’s salary request

Manager: Unfortunately, I can’t negotiate on the salary. We are on a fixed budget for this position.
You: ❣️Politely decline the offer.

Manager: Unfortunately, I can’t negotiate on the salary. We are on a fixed budget for this position. (repeat)
You: ❣️Negotiate other compensation aspects to see if you can come to an agreement (eg. sign-on bonus, PTO, review and raise after agreed upon timeframe, etc.).

Scenario 4

You: Info:
I have over __ years’ experience in this field
I were previously making $53,000
I know the average salary range for this county to be $50,000 – $65,000

Manager: We’d like to offer you the position and the salary would be $55,000/year.
You: Express gratitude & show excitement
Ask if the salary is negotiable.

Manager: The salary is negotiable
You: If salary is negotiable, agree on a timeframe for your answer.
Manager: Sure, I will need an answer in two days, so let’s connect then.
The agreed upon time has passed and back to negotiate…
You: Again – express gratitude & show excitement.
Share your research/salary range, restate relevant skills, and present your offer. Does this align with your budget?

Manager: Accept candidate’s offer or make a counteroffer.
